Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a safe and painless way for doctors to view internal anatomy without surgical procedures. We are proud to offer an open MRI as an alternative for our patients, in addition to our traditional MRI and powerful T3 MRI machines. Our open MRI has open sides to enhance patient comfort through a less restrictive environment while still providing the high quality results our patients expect.
Reducing Anxiety for MRI Procedures
Both traditional and open MRI are important for different types of tests, but in many cases patients feel more comfortable with the open technology. In a traditional MRI exam, patients lay on a table that moves into a cylindrical tube. Studies have shown that one in five patients may experience some anxiety and the open format helps make them feel more comfortable. Scans may require the patient’s entire body to be inside the machine tunnel for the duration of the exam, and as a result patients who suffer from claustrophobia (the fear of confined space) are sometimes unable to complete the procedure. This important alternative helps those with anxiety to complete important medical screening and evaluation, and is the preference for many.
Open on Four Sides
The Open MRI eliminates the tunnel design of a traditional MRI, replacing it with a scanner that is open on all sides. We often tell our patients that it’s like “lying down on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed.” Our open MRI facility creates a comforting environment for our patients, with calming soft lighting, mural backgrounds and designer decor. The airy design of the machine allows patients to see outside and around the machine. Physicians, MRI technicians, or family members can stay close in order to comfort patients. Many patients have benefitted from having friends and family members with them throughout the procedure. The Open MRI is also quieter than a traditional MRI, adding to the soothing environment.

Easier Access for Exams
The design of the open MRI has helped us to expand our services in order to assist more patients. Younger patients especially benefit from the open format, because their parents and doctors can be accompany them during their procedures. Parents are relieved to know that they can be with their children throughout the process. The open space of the machine also allows for an easier examination process for those with limited mobility. Our technologists also use it to scan accurately extremities that were once difficult to scan. The Open MRI is also better able to accommodate bariatric patients, or those who have difficulty lying down in confined spaces.

The Only True Open Provider in the Region
We are constantly working to raise standards by offering our patients the best doctors and the best available technology. Medical Imaging is the first and only facility in the region to offer the comfort and benefits of an open MRI. Other facilities have MRI machines with wider designs, and they may even be referred to as “open MRIs,” but they are often just MRI machines with a larger center area. “True open” means that the machine is open on all four sides, like a “pancake” above the patient. Medical Imaging at Lee’s Hill is the only place in our region where patients can experience a true, open MRI.
Safe, Easy, and Radiation Free
Unlike other types of imaging, an MRI does not use radiation, making it one of the safest medical diagnostic tests available, producing a high level of detail. An MRI uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a complex computer system to provide detailed two or three dimensional images of internal body tissues, nerves, muscles, bones, ligaments, and other tissues. Ultrasound and CT machines may require patient preparations that alter their daily lives, such as withholding food or increasing fluids. An MRI procedure doesn’t normally require the patient’s daily life to be modified; patients can eat normally and go about their regular routine before and after their procedure.
