MIF combines advanced technology with expert providers to give you clear answers when you need them most.
At Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg, we’re proud to play an important role in women’s health. Our Imaging Center for Women has been designated a Breast Imaging Center for Excellence by the American College of Radiology, an honor awarded to only a select few centers in Virginia. This distinction means we meet the highest national standards for care in all ACR-accredited breast imaging modalities, including breast biopsy procedures.
What is a Breast Biopsy?
A breast biopsy is a procedure that collects small samples of breast tissue for further analysis. At MIF, we offer three types of minimally invasive, image-guided breast biopsies:
Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
This method uses ultrasound technology to locate the area in question. It is often used for areas that are clearly visible with ultrasound imaging and allows for real-time guidance during the procedure.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
This technique uses mammographic imaging to precisely target abnormalities that may not be seen on ultrasound. It is performed with the patient lying face down on a special biopsy table.
MRI Breast Biopsy
This method uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the breast, allowing for precise targeting of the biopsy needle. It is performed with the patient laying down on an MRI table with the breast positioned in a specialized biopsy device.
What Can I Expect?
During your breast biopsy, your care will be guided by advanced imaging to ensure accuracy and comfort. For ultrasound-guided biopsies, a technologist will use an ultrasound machine to locate the area of concern. In stereotactic biopsies, mammographic images are used to pinpoint the area. In MRI biopsies, detailed images are used for precise targeting. In all procedures, the area of concern is marked, cleansed, and numbed using a local anesthetic. A small nick will be made in the skin to allow the biopsy needle to pass through more easily. As the samples are collected, you may hear a clicking or buzzing sound. For both types of biopsies, a small, sterile metallic marker clip is placed at the biopsy site, and a soft compression mammogram is taken afterward to confirm placement.
