First and Only 3D Mammography in the Region

Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg is excited to offer 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) for breast cancer screening. Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

First in the Region

This new state of the art equipment is the latest step that Medical Imaging has taken to ensure that women in our region have access to the best available life-saving equipment. Medical Imaging is committed to the fight against breast cancer.

The 3D Mammography equipment is the first and only available in our region and will be an important resource for women in Stafford, Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, King George and Caroline Counties as well as others who find its four locations convenient for health services.

The center’s new 3D Mammography equipment is made by a world leader in digital mammography and offers exceptionally sharp breast images, using an advanced design that creates more patient comfort, and ground-breaking tomosynthesis software that combines multiple one millimeter images into a 3D view. All of this works together to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance for all breast types.

Medical Imaging believes breast tomosynthesis will benefit all screening and diagnostic mammography patients, and is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and/or women with a personal history of breast cancer. Since more than 85% of women do not have low-density breasts, this new equipment represents an important step forward in effective breast cancer screening.

Breast cancer screening with 3D mammography, when combined with a conventional 2D mammography, has a 35% higher invasive cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone. This 3D technology gives radiologists increased confidence with a big reduction in recall rates.

Same Experience, Better Results

The tomosynthesis screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a 3D exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering women the latest and more accurate technology in mammography, Medical Imaging expects to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
