What is a Bone Density Scan?

A bone density scan can help determine if you have osteoporosis. Bone density scans can actually diagnose osteoporosis before you have a fracture. Bone density scans uses X-Rays to measure calcium and other minerals packed into a particular segment of bone.

What Can I Expect?

Bone density tests are done on the bones that are most likely to fracture due to osteoporosis such as the lower spine, the hip, or the forearm. The scan uses a very low dose of radiation, and takes between 10 and 30 minutes to complete. In general, the most accurate scans are of the spine or hip joint. Before and after the exam, you can go about your day as normal.

How Can I Prepare?

  • Tell your doctor if you recently had a barium exam or had contrast material injected

  • Do not take calcium supplements or multivitamins for 24 hours before a scan

  • You will be required to remove everything except for your underwear and change into a hospital gown.
